Growing Writers is a K-2 curriculum that covers all basic writing skills including handwriting, sentence structure, punctuation, and grammar, and various genres of writing including narrative, opinion, and factual writing. Along with prompts and exercises, it provides lots of opportunities to “free write” as well, which gives students much needed practice without pressure to produce a finished product.
The mission of Growing Writers is to help close the achievement gap in the United States. Only a small percentage of children who grow up in poverty perform well in the 8th and 12th grade writing assessment on the NAEP, and writing is an essential skill for college and career success.
Growing Writers helps students gain more than a year’s growth academically because it is based on structured literacy and teaching to mastery, rather than a haphazard approach.
Growing Writers is unique because it meets the needs of young writers at every ability level and works in a common sense, step by step manner. It ensures that each child is confidently ready to tackle the writing assignments that will begin in upper elementary school and beyond.
